You're Coming to Florida on Holiday? Things You Should Know before you Rent a Car

Youre planning a two-week holiday to Florida for entire family. You book your flight, insure your trip with travel insurance, make hotel reservations, reserve your rental car, and even know exactly what you want to see at Disney World. The day finally arrives and everyone is so excited when you land at Orlando International Airport. You proceed to baggage claim and - youre in luck! Your luggage has arrived on the same flight as you, so you head off to the rental car counter.

Here the rental car agent behind the counter will ask for your drivers license and will begin to ask you several questions about what kind car insurance do you want to take. Theres collision, liability insurance, and something called UM (uninsured/underinsured motorist). What should you do?

The first thing you should know is that your travel insurance may not provide the coverage you need in the event that you have a road traffic accident in your rental car. It does not protect you if you are hurt from the fault of others. Your NHS will not provide protection for your family either. In order to have adequate protection for road traffic accidents, there are two types of insurance you will need:

The first is liability insurance. This will protect you and your assets should you cause a road traffic accident and harm someone else.

The second is the uninsured/underinsured, or UM, insurance. You can purchase one million dollars ($1,000,000) in coverage for only a few dollars a day and it is your only protection against bad drivers. What you probably dont know is that the State of Florida allows drivers to own and operate a vehicle without bodily injury liability insurance. This means if you are involved in a road traffic accident with a Florida resident who has no auto insurance, you would virtually have no protection without UM insurance.

Now that you have the proper insurance on the rental car, what should you do if you are in a road traffic accident? It would be best that you not handle your claim alone. It would be most advantageous for you to contact a lawyer who has experience handling road traffic claims for UK and other foreign visitors.
